Is this an online course?
- This class is a blended,or hybrid, face-to-face (in class) course with
online elements.
What’s the difference?
You will as scheduled, in the
classroom. While in class, students will be actively involved with the
course objectives, as they would in any classroom situation.
However, quizzes, exams and graded discussion groups will be held, and
evaluated online.
Students will also be able to access their grades online.
Does this mean I don’t have to come to class?
- No, students must attend the class sessions since that is where the
substance of the course will be taught.
- The online segment is only for taking quizzes, actively
participating in graded, discussion groups, and accessing ones grades.
What do I need for this class?
All online, or partial online, courses require access to the Internet
(56k modem or better).
Students must have their own Internet Service Provider, or may access
the courses by using one of the college's computer labs.
You will need:
Access to a fairly new computer.
Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher) or Nescape (4.7.3 or higher).
Word processing software such as Microsoft Word of Word Perfect
WebCT account.
WebCT Browser
Tuneup will ensure that you are using a supported
browser:
Required Textbook: Oceanography, An Invitation to Marine Science,
Tom Garrison, 5th edition, Brooks/Cole, 2005.
Highly recommended: Goode’s World Atlas, Hudson and
Espenshade, editors; 21st edition, Rand McNally.
How do get a WebCT account?
- You don’t have to do anything to get an account; I will upload your
names by the following day of the first class. (Note: you will not
have access until I let you know that the upload has
been successful.)
- To access your account, use:
WebCT Login Do not
click on "create my WebCT."
Fill in the
WebCT ID = firstnamelastname (no spaces between
the two) (Ex: janedoe)
Password =
birth date (mmddyy) (Ex: 031785 [for Mar. 17,
1985])
What Technical Requirements are there?
You should have access to the Internet using an Internet Service
Provider (ISP) or through the College’s computer labs.
You should be proficient in the following:
- Using a web browser
- sending and receiving e-mail
- using a word processing program
- sending attachments via e-mail (in Word or other
formats)
- downloading software and/or documents
