Final Exam Update:  Final exams are graded and grades are in. You can look at your points on my webpage.  The submitted grades are FINAL. I have been as "benefit of the doubt" as I can possibly be without stepping over ethical boundaries.  As always, those who worked hard earned excellent overall grades and those who didn't work hard (you know who you are)...well I sure wish you had.

Those who worked diligently to understand the material earned an excellent grade and my deepest gratitude and respect. It is you few who have made it all worth the effort. Sadly your "breed" of hardworking student is slowly being replaced by incoming who have a sense of "entitlement" but no real work ethic.

I would like to add that the grade is meant to indicate the level of competency in the subject matter one has achieved.  Two students, each who have "worked hard" can earn very different grades because one understands the material while the other doesn't.  Therefore to hope that your grade can be "modified" because you tried hard is the same as asking the instructor to disregard the purpose of the grade and hand out grades based solely on effort rather than merit.  As a conscientious teacher I cannot and will not "give" a grade. Your grade is earned and it MUST reflect your level of competency of the material.

Transfer schools need to know that your grade is reflective of your performance level because they have the miserable task of selecting the best candidates for their programs.  A falsely represented student (with inflated grades) may be selected over a more intrinsically qualified student based on the only differentiating indicator the school has to go on.  Selecting the wrong candidate is a crime against mankind because the capable with great potential is held back by a process that incorrectly selected a less competent individual with "entitlement" issues.  Therefore it is the teacher that carries the torch of responsibility to make sure that colleges/universities/programs are getting transcripts with grades that are accurate and indicative of the student's work ethic and potential.

A student commented, "I hope I pass!! :-)"

Hope is for when things are beyond your control. Hard work is always within your control! Hard work and diligence produce positive results in both character and material goals.

Passing a class, like succeeding in life, is all about how hard you work*...period! The sooner you understand and embrace this very simple but extremely important principle/concept, the sooner things will improve in your lives and the lives of those whom you affect.

* How hard you work is not equivalent to how hard you try.

When working hard there is no try there is only do.  Yes...Yoda said it but that does not invalidate its worth.  One perseveres with hard work until one accomplishes the intended goal.  When one merely tries, one is capable of failing and often does. There is no try there is only do!
