CIS 180 - COMPUTER PROGRAMMING (VISUAL BASIC )

3 Hours Lecture, 3 Hours Laboratory, 4 Units

I. Catalog Description

An introduction to computer programming using Visual BASIC. Emphasis will be placed on practical applications of programming for today's technology. Laboratory instruction will include program development and execution.

II. Advisory Prerequisite

CIS 110ABCD

III Course Objectives

To have the student become proficient at developing and implementing programs to solve problems in a variety of areas using the Visual BASIC programming environment.

IV. Minimum Student Materials

Pencil, paper, text, diskettes

V. Minimum Instructional Facilities

  1. Classroom with networked computers
  2. Software to create the Visual BASIC programming environment.

VI. Course Content

  1. Programming
    1. A short history of BASIC
    2. How the Visual BASIC programming environment works
    3. Programming constructs
  2. Applications
    1. Creating an application
    2. Saving and modifying an application
    3. Creating EXE files

VII. Method of Instruction

  1. Hands-on lecture (students completing in-class projects with the instructor's guidance and assistance).
  2. Lecture, Demonstration
  3. Hands-on exercises

VIII. Method of Evaluation

  1. A grading system will be established by the instructor and implemented uniformly. Grades will be based on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter determined by multiple measurement for evaluation, one of which must be essay exams, skills demonstration or, where appropriate, symbol system.
