CIS 200 - NETWORKS AND TELEPROCESSING

2 Hours Lecture, 1 Hour Laboratory, 2 Units

I. Catalog Description
A first course in networks and teleprocessing with emphasis on Local Area Networks. Topics include network concepts, operating systems, hardware, and future developments in teleprocessing. Students will operate a network operating system and learn basic system administrator skills. (Specific software packages to be identified in class schedule.)

III. Course Objectives

  1. Evaluate and compare different network systems.
  2. Use basic network administrator commands to operate a local area network.
  3. Identify major types of network hardware commonly used in a typical network installation.
  4. Identify and compare capabilities of various network operating systems available.
  5. Use fundamental network terms in describing network system concepts.
  6. Design basic network configurations including servers, hubs, routers, repeaters, bridges.

  1. Lecture classroom
  2. Laboratory with networked computers and current data communication software
  3. Audiovisual equipment

VI. Course Content

  1. Overall aspects of local area networks.
  2. Basic terms and concepts.
  3. Major types of hardware available including servers, hubs, routers, repeaters, bridges.
  4. Network operating systems used today.
  5. Network configurations.
  6. Network operating commands.

VII. Method of Instruction

  1. Lecture
  2. Hands-on lecture (students completing in-class projects with the instructor's guidance and assistance).
  3. Demonstration
  4. Hands-on exercises

VIII. Method of Evaluation

A grading system will be established by the instructor and implemented uniformly. Grades will be based on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter determined by multiple measurement for evaluation, one of which must be essay exams, skills demonstration or, where appropriate, symbol system.
