ENVT 240 Course Outline

Cooperative Work Experience

Course Description: Practical application of principles and procedures learned in the classroom to various phases of Environmental Technology - ENVT. Work experience will be paid or volunteer positions at local environmental technology industries or governmental agencies that regulate environmental industries.

Prerequisite: Students must have completed six units at Cuyamaca College in ENVT from the following: ENVT 100, 110, 130, 150, 200, 230
5 hours paid or 4 hours unpaid work experience per week per unit

Units: Two - Three
The unit value for work experience or field experience is one unit for each five hours of paid work experience per week or four hours of unpaid work experience per week completed during the course. Units will be awarded based upon a 15 week semester.

Course Objectives: The student will...

  • IDENTIFY Two - Three specific goals to be completed during the semester which enhance their basic knowledge in ENVT
  • DESCRIBE each goal with a completion date and method to accomplish an individual training plan
  • PRACTICE occupational skills at a job site
  • ANALYZE hazardous materials job duty requirements in industry
  • ASSESS future training needs for a hazardous materials career

Minimum Student Materials: Depending On The Location Security Clearance and Personnel Protective Equipment

Minimum Instructional Facilities: Classroom for course orientation and course exit meeting

Course Content: Pursue a set of goals which includes new or expanded responsibilities or learning opportunities beyond those experienced during previous employment. Goals must be approved by the instructor and work supervisor. The student must maintain accurate records and time sheets. Attend a course orientation and course exit meeting. (Date and time to be announced) Schedule two meetings with the instructor during the semester to evaluate students goals. Participate in an evaluation process to be administered by the instructor and work supervisor.

Method Of Instruction: Field Observation and on the job training

Method Of Evaluation: Completion of goals to be determined by the instructor, employer/supervisor and student Student journal on the CWE

Texts And References: Each site will provide material relevant to the CWE at no cost to the student or Department

Reason For Addition: This class is being added as an elective to the ENVT Certificate / Degree Program upon recommendation of the ENVT Advisory committee. This class will enable ENVT students to gain work experience that will assist them in future employment, career decisions and upgrading of skills for those currently employed. It will also help establish linkage between the ENVT program and local environmental industries.
