| The library is central to the use of information resources. Librarians
help students locate books and periodical articles in the librarys collection, and
specialized resources on the Internet. The online public access catalog provides access to
both the Cuyamaca and Grossmont library collections. Periodical indexes on CD-ROM enable
searching of magazines, journals and newspapers. Several newspapers are available in
full-text on CD-ROM. Materials not available at Cuyamaca or Grossmont can be obtained
through interlibrary loan. Librarians assist students in their navigation through the
increasing wealth of print, nonprint, and online resources. Students are actively
encouraged to become trained researchers in the complex and changing world of information
literacy. A wide variety of instruction is available in the library. Group orientations
for classes are available on request. Scheduled a week or more in advance by an
instructor, these orientations can be general in nature or designed to meet some specific
course objective. Students interested in honing their research skills can take English
150, a one unit course in library use and research methods, or English 151 which focuses
on use of the Internet and critical thinking in an online world.
A variety of audio-visual materials, including tapes of all telecourse lessons
currently being broadcast, is available for playback use in the Listening/Viewing Area.
The librarys computer lab contains a network of Macintosh and PC computer
equipment with color monitors, laser printers, scanners, CD-ROM and zip drives. Desktop
publishing and other software necessary to support the instructional program are provided,
including the Internet and e-mail access. The lab is an open lab and is available to
faculty and to currently enrolled Cuyamaca and Grossmont students for general use.
