Art Appreciation: Art 100
Your textbook: ARTFORMS, Seventh Edition, by Duane Preble.

As we move through the semester, you will have the opportunity to use various Internet sites to further explore the topics discussed in class and in your textbook.

One of your Journal assignments for each of the Parts of the class, and there are four, is to visit two web sites of your choosing from the list presented on these web pages and respond to the questions posed in your Journal. You will receive guidelines for this assignment in class.

Course Description:
In this introductory course the student learns how to examine, compare, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and discuss works of visual art in their cultural contexts. Art media for study will include drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and architecture. Works for examination will encompass representative artistic styles from Western and other major world cultures, and will also include artistic contributions of women and minority cultures. (3 hours lecture/3 units credit) This course adheres to the policies outlined in the Cuyamaca College catalog. For further information, see Academic Policies stated in the catalog.

None.

Course Objectives:

The student will be able to render a personal definition of "art" and identify different kinds of media in the visual arts, becoming familiar with methods and materials appropriate to each medium. Students will be familiar with the formal elements of a work of art. Students will be encouraged to develop their artistic interpretive skills in both verbal and written form. Lastly, students will be exposed to a variety of artworks from different historical, social, and cultural contexts. This course is intended to reach a wide audience: it satisfies a General Education (GE) requirement.
