Journal Assignments: Part I

Remember: the Journal Assignments are due on test day for Part I and your points need to add up to 10 points.

Mandatory assignment (2 points possible): Heritage Museum Exercise.

Choose from the following Journal Assignments to make up 8 points.

Museum Kids: From the story of the three African American children in the museum, what would YOU say to the kids? (1 point possible)

Your definition of art: What is “art” to you? (1 point possible)

Art in your life: Select one of the purposes of art (from the textbook) and tell how art serves that purpose in your life. Be specific. (1 point possible)

Personal Iconography Collage: Tell me about yourself using a “personal iconography” of images from magazines and collage them on to a page in your Journal. (1 point possible)

Web site questions: Got to my web pages on the Cuyamaca web site, and choose from Part I, one or two questions to answer. My web pages can be reached directly at:

Click on Directory at the top band of the page then click on my name from the faculty list.

Once you get to my pages, click on Part I. If you choose one question/activity to do it is worth 1 point. If you choose 2 question/activity to do it is worth 2 points.

Favorite Artist: Select one of the artists whose work is found in the Chapters we cover in Part I. Why would you like to make art like this artist? What is it about their work that draws you to it? (1 point possible)

Line Drawing Experiment: Do a drawing in your Journal using at least three types of line. (1 point possible)

 Kandinsky’s Color Scheme: Look at the painting on page 3 of your textbook by Kandinsky. Write about the way he uses color and his color theory. (1 point possible)

Draw like Kandinsky: Kandinsky’s painting on page 3 of your textbook is an abstract composition of a landscape. Taking his style as your inspiration, do a color sketch (with colored pencils) based on the landscape around Cuyamaca College. (1 point possible)

 Color Scheme Scribble: Do a “scribble” drawing (similar to the one we do in class) and use one of these color schemes: monochromatic, analogous, or complementary. (1 point possible)

Design Analysis: Look at the design analysis of Jacob Lawrence’s painting on page 73. Choose another painting from the textbook, copy it on a copier, and analyze the design in the same way the Lawrence painting is analyzed. (1 point possible)

Career Choices and family: Read about Matisse on page 90. How do you think his father reacted? (1 point possible)

You, an art critic? Would you like to be an art critic? Why or why not? What would be the disadvantage(s) of being an art critic? The advantages? (1 point possible)

Style of a Period: What was Gauguin’s Nabis Group at Point-Aven about? What was their common interest that makes them a good example of a period style? (1 point possible)
