Part II: Media

Chapter 7: Drawing
1. Compare and contrast the two types of hatching which some artists use to show that a form has depth or mass on the Cleveland Museum of art web site.
2. Albrecht Durer used perspective in his sketch of The Minster at Aachen. Place a thin sheet of paper, such as tracing paper, on your monitor and find the vanishing point is. Also put in a couple of landmarks so that you can find the vanishing point again when you show the drawing to someone else.

Chapter 8: Painting
1. Audrey Flack, whose work is pictured in this chapter, is considered to be a leading photorealist. View her works online. Compare Crayola 1972 with Invocation 1982. Could you imagine yourself painting like she paints? Why or why not?
2. Judy Baca said of her mural project Great Wall of Los Angeles Visit the SPARC Mural website and view the entire mural online. Just place the cursor over the right side to move right and over the left side to move left. The mural is composed of histories that are often ignored due to their controversy. Which section do you consider to be the most controversial and why?
3. Painters often paint what they see in their everyday lives. This is called genre painting. Explore varieties of genre painting and then answer this question: what is there in your everyday life that you could paint if you were a painter? What is it about this subject matter that interests you?


Chapter 9: Printmaking
1. There are many different printmaking processes that all result in unique visions. Visit the Printmaking Artists website and select two artists working in the same media. Compare and contrast their work.
2. Lithography was invented in the 19th century out of a need to produce copies of good quality and at a low cost. Daumier and Toulous Lautrec were two early fine art practitioners of this media. Visit the Daumier website and the Lautrec site and compare and contrast the artists use of lithography.
3. Andy Warhol brought silk screening into the world of fine art. Visit the Warhol site and discuss his choice of media in conjunction with his style.

Chapter 10: Camera Arts

1. Recognized as one of America's greatest photographers, Ansel Adams used his photographs to promote public awareness of the extraordinary landscape of the West. Visit his website and view the virtual exhibition of his work. Notice his use of b&w photography. Either write in your Journal about his use of composition, or take black and white or color photographs that echo his use of composition.
2. Although the Camera Obscura is a precursor to photography they still exist today. Visit the Camera Obscura site and write about the evolution of the Camera Obscura as though you were telling a friend about it.
3.Margaret Bourke-White served as a photojournalist for Life magazine. Her work is considered to possess some of finest examples of photography as an instrument for social change. Visit her website and select two images. Write about how they might be instruments of social change.

Chapter 12: Sculpture
1. Bronze has been in use for over three thousand years. Visit the bronze history site and discuss the importance of bronze in Roman times.
2. Duane Hanson's super-realist sculptures were cast from human models and rendered in polyvinyl, auto body filler (bondo), or bronze. He then painted the surface in such detail as to resemble human flesh and lastly clothed his work. Check out his site. How does their lifelike appearance affect your reaction to them as art?
3. Nam June Paik works in mixed media, combining video with construction. In the 1990s he had an exhibition entitled the Electronic Superhighway. What role does humor play?

Chapter 14: Architecture & Environmental Design
1.The Bauhaus was the most important school of architecture, design, and art of the 20th century. The Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design in Berlin is concerned with the history and impact of the Bauhaus. Visit their website and discuss the influence of the Bauhaus on modern architecture. Discuss why the Bauhaus closed and how its closing affected American design.
2.Frank Lloyd Wright was America’s foremost architect. His designs have had an undeniable influence on American architecture. Visit the Frank Lloyd Wright website and review his designs. Compare and contrast Falling Water with Taliesan.
3.The Pont du Gard, located outside Nimes, France is one the finest remaining examples of Roman construction. Visit the website for the Pont du Gard and discuss how this aqueduct was constructed and how it worked.
