ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY TECHNOLOGY
201 – INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, 4 units
Catalog Description
Anticipation, recognition, revaluation and control of biological,
chemical and physical hazards in the workplace. Introduction to
the development of industrial hygiene and occupational health and
safety as a professional discipline. Provides students with an understanding
of basic physiological processes and the effects caused by occupational
exposure to hazards. Students will survey various occupational health
and safety programs and government regulations. Familiarizes students
with industrial hygiene monitory and sampling techniques for airborne
contaminants, noise, heat, radiation and illumination.
Recommended Preparation
ENVT 100 or concurrent enrollment
Entrance Skills
Without the following skills, competencies and/or knowledge, students
entering this course will be highly unlikely to succeed:
1) Define and apply environmental technology terminology and acronyms
2) Understand and analyze historical occupational safety and health
laws and regulations which impact industrial hygiene and occupational
health and their effects on the workers
3) Understand and apply industrial hygiene philosophy to occupational
safety and health
4) Have a general understanding of biological/physical/chemical
hazards, chemical physical characteristics, routes of entry and
programs needed to manage workplace safety and health
Course Objectives
Students will be able to:
1) Through written examination, identify and relate key historical
elements to current regulations and accepted practices in industrial
hygiene and occupational safety.
2) By written examination, interpret, analyze, criticize and evaluate
sampling procedures and related health and safety reports.
3) As examined by laboratory exercise, demonstrate the proper use,
preparation and calibration of industrial hygiene instrumentation.
4) Given a workplace scenario, develop a comprehensive health and
safety plan that includes healing conservation requirements and
respiratory protection requirements and workplace monitoring.
5) By laboratory exercise, demonstrate appropriate radiation safety
requirements used during the storage, handling and disposal of radioactive
material.
6) Given specified work conditions, evaluate ergonomic deficiencies
and apply appropriate ergonomic principles to correct/improve the
working conditions as demonstrated through a written examination.
7) By written research, demonstrate a basic knowledge of the pathological
effects to human anatomy and physiology caused by exposure to harmful
agents as it relates to occupational exposure.
8) Given a laboratory work scenario, devise a laboratory and biohazards
safety plan using current laws and regulations.
Special Materials Required of Student
None
Minimum Instructional Facilities
Standard classroom
Course Content
1) Historical overview of industrial hygiene
2) Industrial hygiene programs
3) Radiation safety
4) Application of ergonomic principles
5) Pathological effects
Method of Instruction
1) Lecture and discussion
2) Projects
3) Field trips

matter determined by multiple measurements for evaluation, one of
which must be essay exams, skills demonstration or, where appropriate,
the symbol system.
1) Verbal and written communication skills, quizzes, exams
2) Participation
3) Attendance
4) Hands-on activities
Texts and References
1) Required: Plog, B. A., ed. Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene.
4th edition. National Safety Council, 2000.
