MathMax: Online Math Exercises for
Basic Mathematics and Introductory and Intermediate Algebra

This site is designed to support and aid students using the "MathMax - The Bittinger System of Instruction" mathematics books. However, since it is online, every student can use it. You can access this site from home and do the exercises. In order to be able to access the exercises you have to install the InterAct Math Plug-in. This has to be done only once.

The InterAct Math Plug-in Installation:

  1. Open Netscape or Internet Explorer
  2. Type: http://www.mathmax.com
  3. Click on the book you are using for your math class
  4. Click on InterAct Math Problems button
  5. Click on "Download InterAct math" icon to download the required plugIn
  6. Click on "Installation Instructions" link (read the provided information later)
  7. Click on Click on "Download InterAct math" icon
  8. A window with the complete download instructions (given below) will be opened:
  

To make this process easier, you should print this page first. Then complete each of the following steps:

  1. Click here to download the installation file.*
  2. A dialog box will ask you where you would like to save the file. Select a folder on your hard drive to save it in and make a note of the location to which you save it.
  3. Quit Netscape or Internet Explorer.
  4. Using your Windows Explorer (this can be found from the "Start" menu under "Programs"), locate the saved file and double-click on it to launch the installation.
  5. Make the appropriate selections in the dialog boxes as you proceed through the installation. Note: If you have both Netscape and Internet Explorer on your machine and you want to access the InterAct Math content from both, you must run the installation twice, selecting a different browser each time.
  6. Once the installation is complete, close and then reopen Netscape or Internet Explorer (so that your browser will detect the plug-in). Then return to your textbook's Web site or to MathXL.

*PLEASE NOTE: You may experience problems if you are using SmartDownload, as it does not yet support the download of .exe files in the http protocol. You will have to disable SmartDownload (using the Add/Remove programs option from your Control Panel) in order to download this file.

  1. Click on Click here (step 1 of the instruction) and follow the steps to complete the download.

To do the exercises, follow the following steps:

  1. Open Netscape or Internet Explorer
  2. Type: http://www.mathmax.com in location box
  3. Click on the appropriate book
  4. Click on InterAct Math Problems button
  5. Choose a chapter
  6. Choose a section
  7. Choose an Exercise
  8. After confirming answer, you can use the back button for more exercises.
