Soyinka, Wale. Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide. 5th Edition. 978-0071545884. Compare Prices at Cheap Textbooks.com The required text covers the requirements for the certification exam very well. It is highly technical and assumes an intermediate level of knowledge of the Linux command line. If you are not well versed in Linux command line usage, I would highly recommend that you also purchase the recommended text. It will provide you the reference and additional background information you will need to pass the class.A copy of both texts are on reserve in the Learning Resource Center. Students may checkout the text for a three hour period, but the text must remain in the Learning Resource Center. Lab Requirements The VMWare lab environment is provided via college server’s across the web. This environment can be slow depending upon the number of students using the system, the speed and quality of your computer and the speed of your Internet connection. For the online class section: A copy of the in-class sections virtual machine (VM) can be obtained from the CIS lab technician for use on your home computer. To use this VM for class labs, you would need to use the in-class labs instead of the online labs to get the correct procedures. With the exception of the Network Configuration and the Network Services Labs, all other labs can be accomplished using the in-class section's VM. You will need a computer with a minimum of 2GB of RAM to run the in-class VM on your home computer. If you are not local and desire to use a local VM instead of the one across the Web, you can download a copy of the VM and install the software as part of the normal lab sequence. For in-class section students: You will check out a USB hard drive from the Cuyamaca College Library Circulation Desk. On the drive is a copy of the class VM. You will be able to keep this drive throughout the semester. Bring it to class each week as it will be your lab environment. You can complete most labs using this environment from home. The labs requiring access to classroom resources (networking, file sharing, etc.) must be completed in the campus lab.
