Assignment #2

Journal Research: Societal Issues

 

Goal: To use published journal sources for investigating a current societal issue, affecting the socialization of children in our community.

 

Directions:

1. Choose a current societal issue which a child (ages 0 to 18) may face in our community, and would have implications for child care, school, or teaching (chapters 5, 6, 7 in the text). Your instructor will post a list of pre-approved topics which are suitable. If your topic is not on the list, please email the instructor for approval before you start your research.

 

2. Locate at least 3 research articles in an academic journal which relates to your topic (see directions for “Research – Locating Journal Articles” under the Course Documents button).

 

The articles you use must be published in an academic journal, which means you will not be able to simply “Google” or “Yahoo” it. Please follow the directions in the handout! (It’s easy….)

 

3. After you have selected the perfect articles, save these articles in your computer files.

 

4. Read each article carefully.

 

5. Summarize the information your found including:
   1. Why was this societal issue of concern to you?
   2. What are the six most interesting facts reported? What how was each of these facts supported by evidence from your reading?
   3. How could this societal issue affect child care, school, and/or teaching?

 

6. Reference the articles using APA format, and add the saved articles (from your computer files) as an appendix to your paper.

 

7. Please type your paper as a MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT with 1” margins, double-spaced, using a 12 pt. Times New Roman font, and APA format. (See “Guide for Writing APA Style” listed under Course Documents, and “Grading Rubric – Journal Research: Societal Issues,” and “Sample Paper – Journal Research: Societal Issues” listed under Assignments for guidance).

 

8. This is a college level writing assignment. There should be NO MECHANICAL ERRORS (spelling, grammar, structure, etc.). If you are unsure of your writing skills, please use the college Tutoring / Writing center. For information see:

9. Submit your paper via the “Drop Box” on the Blackboard site by the required date.
