Community Resource Agency Assignment

 

Goal: To locate, research, and report on local community agencies which support the child, family, and community.

 

Directions:

1. Locate a local non-profit community resource agency that is available for children, parents, or teachers. Once you find the agency you want to research, email the professor at madeline.noakes@gcccd.net, and type in the subject line “Community Resource Assignment”. No two students may use the same agency to research so you must have pre-approved from the instructor before you begin your research! Agency selection will be done on a “first-come-first-served” basis. The instructor will email you an “ok” once your agency has been approved.

 

2. Once approved, gather information on the resource you have found. You are required to either visit the agency in person for a tour, or conduct a detailed phone interview with someone who works at the agency. Be sure to get the person’s name that you speak with, as you will need it for your reference page. You may also get information from brochures at the agency or from their website.

 

3. Summarize the information you have gathered into a 3-page written summary. The paper should:
   1. Explain the scope of the problem/issue including its prevalence, history, causes and its effects on children, families and the local community. Please include quantitative information (statistics!).

 

2. Describe information about the community agency you have found including…

                                                              i.      contact information

                                                           ii.      overview of services offered

                                                         iii.      history

                                                          iv.      conditions for eligibility

                                                            v.      number of clients served

 

3. Conclude by relating your experiences and impressions while visiting this agency. Summarize with your personal opinions of this agency.

 

4. Please type your paper as a Microsoft Word document, with 1” margins, double-spaced, using a 12 pt. Times New Roman font, and APA format. (See “Guide for Writing APA Style” and “Grading Rubric – Community Resource Agency,” and “Sample Paper – Community Resource Agency Assignment” listed under Assignments for guidance).

 

5. This is a college level writing assignment. There should be NO MECHANICAL ERRORS (spelling, grammar, structure, etc.). If you are unsure of your writing skills, please use the college Tutoring / Writing center. For information see:

6. Upload your paper onto the Discussion Board during week #14 and introduce it briefly to the class. This will enable all class members to become familiar with services provided by non-profit agencies in the community.

 

7. You must also submit your paper via the “Digital Drop Box” on the Blackboard website by the required date.
