Research assignment
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to
encourage you to explore current and relevant issues as discussed in
class to begin writing issues in an unbiased manner. In doing so, you
will practice writing in third person point of view using all
forms of the writing process (invention, drafting, revising and
editing), while researching both sides of an issue. You will then
form a strong thesis statement which specifically states the argument to
ensure the audience has a clear understanding of both sides of the
issue. Your essay should follow a clear and logical plan of development
whereas both sides of the argument are presented without bias and
personal opinion.
Prompt:
You’re a journalist reporting on this very important issue! Remember to
act as a reporter and gather enough information to adequately support
the argument which is being presented. Once you have decided on your
essay topic, you must then determine the following: What is the purpose
for this argument? What will help the reader to understand clearly all
sides of the issue ? The key term here is argument.
Argument essays appear weak when
the reader feels what they are reading has failed to demonstrate a
strong purpose for the issue being presented.
Once you have gained a solid
understanding of the issue, write a well-structured argument essay
reporting the effects of the issue to your readers. Please carefully
consider what your readers already know about the topic and try to
interest them in the issue at hand. Your goal is to examine the issue
in an unbiased way, which means that you will take care not to express
your position on the issue (should you have one)—so, be an objective
writer!
