Women in Modern American History

This research guide has been developed by your instructor and librarian to help you complete your final project. Your assignment: Students may write a report of 4-7 pages of actual body on the papers on a significant American woman.  The goal of this project is to teach the students how to find scholarly primary source history material on the Internet. This is an Internet search project. The report must contain citation of Internet sources within the body of the paper.

  • Reference source is a bibliography of articles or other reference sources
  • Volume 3 contains chronological, geographic and occupation indexes
    useful for selecting a person

  • Gives 5 to 6 page article on individual
  • Each article contains ‘Early Life’, ‘Life’s Work’, ‘Summary’ and ‘Bibliography’ on the person   Bibliography is very useful in finding books and essays

The Continuum Dictionary of Women’s Biography In Print

  • Gives brief articles
  • Some articles have abbreviated bibliographies
  • "Subject Index by Categories" in the back of the book is useful for selecting a person

Notable American Women 1607 to 1950 In Print

  • Give 1 to 2 page article on individuals
  • Each article has a bibliography to other sources
  • ‘Classified List of Selected Biographies’ in the back of the book

Black Women in America - A Historical Encyclopedia In Print

  • All articles give a picture of the individual
  • All articles have useful bibliography
  • ‘Black Women in the United States: A Chronology’ (p.1309) and
  • ‘Classified List of Biographical Entries’ (p.1353) in the back of volume 2 is useful for selecting a person
  • Index to both volumes also in the back of volume 2 (p.1381)
  • Appendix A: Women’s History

  • Give brief articles on topics as well as on individuals
  • Each article has very useful bibliography
  • Index in the back of the book; Bold type indicates name of article.
