U.S. law is based on the concept of precedent.
It
is important to know the history and treatment of any case
as it moves through the appeals process. History is what happened to the case on
appeal. Treatment is how the case was treated in
subsequent judicial opinions.

To shepardize a case:
1. Find the volume number and court reporter
within the appropriate Shepard's set.
2. Cited volume numbers appear at the corner of
the page in Shepard's.
3. Cited page numbers appear in bold
type with "-" marks, e.g. -234-.
4. Case(s) in parenthesis is a
"parallel" cite to the same case in another reporter.
5. First set of citations refers to the
HISTORY of the cited case in appellate courts.
6. Second set of citations refers to
TREATMENT of the cited case as precedent
