How to search for Shepard's Case and Statute Citators ( AKA shepardizing)

Cuyamaca Library subscribes to two Shepards citators

  • Shepard's California Citations. Cases.
Call Number: KFC 59 S44 Ref.
  • Shepards's California Citations. Statutes.
Call Number: KFC 59 S44 Ref

U.S. law is based on the concept of precedent. It is important to know the history and treatment of any case as it moves through the appeals process. History is what happened to the case on appeal. Treatment is how the case was treated in subsequent judicial opinions.

For a better understanding of Shepardizing, view the video called Introduction to Shepardizing.
You may view this video at Cuyamaca Library.  Ask the check-out desk for Video # PARA

To shepardize a case:

    1. Find the volume number and court reporter within the appropriate Shepard's set.

    2. Cited volume numbers appear at the corner of the page in Shepard's.

    3. Cited page numbers appear in bold type with "-" marks, e.g. -234-.

    4. Case(s) in parenthesis is a "parallel" cite to the same case in another reporter.

    5. First set of citations refers to the HISTORY of the cited case in appellate courts.

    6. Second set of citations refers to TREATMENT of the cited case as precedent
