Pop-up Blockers

Blackboard sometimes uses small browser windows to deliver requested content known as pop-ups. One of the most common problems with pop-up blocking software is that it prevents students from doing things in Blackboard. Quizes, participating in the discussion board and chat forums are just a few examples.

Common Pop-up Blockers

Note: Many users have multiple programs and/or utilities that include pop-up blocking functions installed on their workstations. Some of the more common programs are listed below. To learn more about how to configure these programs, click on the provided link. If no link is provided, refer to the Help menu in the affected programs.

Browser Pop-up Blockers

Internet Explorer

If you want to allow pop-ups from a specific website

• Click on Tools -> Pop-up Blocker
• Click on Pop-up Blocker Settings
• Type the URL (web address) of the website you want to allow
• Click Add

Tip: To temporarily allow a site to display pop-ups, click the Information Bar when it notifies you that a pop-up has been blocked. Then click Temporarily Allow Pop-ups.

Internet Explorer
Microsoft Windows XP SErvice Pack 2

• Click on Tools
• Choose Pop-up Blocker
• Click on Turn Off Pop-up Blocker

Firefox

• Go to Tools -> Options
  (for Mac OS X: Firefox menu -> Preferences)
• Click Web Features or Content
• Un-check the box for "Block Pop-up Windows"

Netscape/Mozilla

• Open the Preferences menu
  • Using Microsoft Windows, the Preferences menu is in the Edit menu
  • Using Mac OS X, the Preferences menu is in the Netscape/Mozilla menu
• Open the Privacy and Security Menu
• Select Pop Up Windows and Un-check 'Block unrequested pop ups'

Safari

• Open the Safari Menu and choose Preferences
• Open the Security Menu
• Un-check 'Block pop up windows'

Toolbars

Google

• Click on the Google Icon and select 'Options'
• In the Accessories Section un-check 'Pop-up Blocker'

Yahoo

• Click on the Pop-Up Icon
• Un-check 'Enable Pop-Up Blocker'

MSN

• Click on the MSN Icon and select 'MSN Search Toolbar Options'
• Below 'Toolbar' on the left side, click on 'Pop-Up Blocker'
• Un-check the box labeled 'Turn off Pop-Up Blocker'
• Click OK

AOL

• Click on the AOL Icon to the left of the search box
• Select 'Turn off Pop-up Blocker'

Firewalls

Norton Internet Security

• Double Click on the Norton Icon in the System Tray
• Click 'Ad Blocking'
• Click 'Turn Off'

McAfee Security Center

• Open McAfee Security Center -> Privacy Service
• Click on Options, from the categories on the left side
• Choose the 'Block Ads' tab
• Un-check both boxes

Zone Alarm Pro/Zone Alarm Security Suite

• Open Zone Alarm
• Select Privacy -> Main
• In the Ad Blocking area options should be there to turn it off
