How is it done?
Translating Spoken English into Visual American Sign Language to Perform
Songs in Sign Language.

Presenter(s): Therese Botz, Ed.D.

The
Cuyamaca College American Sign Language Choir has received recognition
as one of the few “sign choirs” that uses actual American Sign Language
in their performances. The choir director and her colleagues will
demonstrate how an English lyric, often with many metaphors, is
translated into actual American Sign Language. This is not
“transliteration,” rather a complex process where the meaning of the
lyrics are retained while selecting the appropriate visual structure in
which to perform both the lyrics and the music. The result is a
beautiful and artistic performing are.
