Each applicant must do his or her
best when completing their scholarship package, this means
completing the scholarship package must be done in detail. In this
section the essay/personal
statement
writing process will be reviewed and several guidelines provided to help each applicant.
Writing
Rules:
A. ALWAYS
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR, this means that the all questions, writing requirements, and specific
instructions provided by the sponsor must be followed.
B. WRITING FORMAT BASICS,
each
sponsor may have slightly different requirements than those listed here. However, the following writing basics provide the
general guidelines to be used during your writing
process.
First read the sponsors'
Essay/Personal Statement requirements, ensure you
understand the question or questions being presented.
Second
make sure you use the writing format and writing guidelines
required by the
sponsor when you type the Essay/Personal Statement, some of
those guidelines
may
include the following:
Use plain white bond
paper, 8 1/2 x 11
All margins 1" on
each side (Unless otherwise designated by Sponsor)
On the First Page, place name First, MI., and
Address in the upper Left-hand corner. On
the
right side name place date.

On the Second Page, place on the right side, your
last name and page number on any
additional pages

C. WRITING
PROCESS, each sponsor may have
different requirements
than those listed here, however, the following writing basics
provide the general
guidelines to be used during
your scholarship applicants
process.
DO'S:
DO: Create an outline, organize your writing around the questions
being asked by the sponsor.
DO:
Multiple drafts, make sure your answers clearly
answer the questions being asked
DO:
Submit a clean
copy, that is review for correct grammar, spelling and
punctuation.
DO:
Have someone (an Instructor, or English Lab Tutor etc.) review your essay
for neatness,
clarity, and grammar. Make sure your
paper addresses all the questions being asked.
DON'TS:
DO NOT:
Write your essay using slang or in appropriate
language.
DO
NOT: Hand write your essay/personal statement
DO
NOT:
Elaborate on how "broke" you are, or
how "badly" you need to pay rent, or get your car
fixed etc.
DO
NOT: Discuss how you are receiving social assistance
