Bonus Research WebQuest Assignment

Guidelines 

Pick a prominent American woman who lived anytime within the general dates of our course: 1607 to 1877.

Do a web search to find information about her life. Do not use online encyclopedias or online reference books. The goal of the assignment is to allow you to “dig deeper” into the live and contributions of a significant American women and also to teach you how to use the Internet for scholarly research.

Find 3 (three) scholarly websites pertaining to this individual

Answer the following:

Remember to number your responses to each point below:

1) List each of the three websites giving the full URL of each. This has to be a distinct   website—not different pages off the same main site.

2) What search engine did you use for each site that you picked?

3) Describe the type of information on each site.  Summarize the information on each of the three sites that you picked.

4) Evaluate the ease of use of each site

5) (a) What is the source of the information on the site and who is posting it to the Internet? (b) In other words, how do you know that the site is a scholarly one? Did you detect any bias or significant interpretation to the material?

6) Is there anything special or particularly striking about the site? What distinguishes it from the others?

7) Discuss three new things that you learned from each of the three sites. (Three items from each site--nine new things total.) This must be new material beyond the text or content discussed in class.

 8) Upon concluding the project write a brief appraisal to be included in the end of your report discussing (a) your assessment of the most important thing you learned from the assignment (b) your appraisal of the value of conducting research on the Internet

The report should be a minimum of four to maximum of seven pages. The report is to be double-spaced and typed in font 12 (no larger).  Print sources are not acceptable sources. Online reference books are not acceptable sources. This is an Internet research project. The report must contain citation of Internet sources within the body of the paper. Do not put your report in a folder. Your topic must be chosen by October 9. The paper is due November 6. Students will briefly share a portion of their research findings with the class (3 minutes maximum) in order to obtain the full 15 bonus points.

  1. In order to earn the 5 bonus points list the topic chosen:  It must be an American woman (or a woman living in America) with a significant portion of her life within the dates 1607-1877.
  1. Topic has to be on our list or approved by the instructor
  1. In order to earn the 5 bonus points list in pen or type the name of the person on a sheet of paper.
  1. List one scholarly website (complete URL).
    1. List the type of information on the site
    2. Discuss how you know the site you have chosen is a scholarly site. 
  1. In order to receive the bonus 5 pts., you must fulfill all the above requirements and complete the full Web Quest report due on October 7.
