Description

This course covers the social, political, economic, cultural and intellectual development of women in America from 1607 to 1877.

Course Objectives
      The student will be able to:

  1. Explain the major events of American history from the colonial period to 1877 from a woman's perspective and access the impact of those events on women.

  2. Describe the political, cultural and social contributions of women to American society.

  3. Evaluate significant theories of historical interpretation in order to develop his/her own understanding of the past.

Method of Instruction

The major method of presentation will be lectures, class discussion and group work. Students are expected to be active learners. Come to class prepared to discuss the day's assignment. Class participation and attendance will be used to determine class participation points. Comments on your reading should be brought to each class. Study guide sheets are for your own preparation. They will not be collected for graded evaluation. Filling out the study guide handouts is essential to aid you in learning the material of the course. Course Requirements

 Exams  

There will be a mid-term and a final exam. Exams will be part essay and part objective (100 points each). The mid-term will be October. 20. The final exam will be December 15 at 11:00 a.m. I will exchange blue books with you to make sure your blue book is clean when you begin; therefore arrive in class on the exam dates with a "clean" blue book (small size). If you miss the mid-term exam you will have to notify me on or before the date of the exam with a valid excuse in order to schedule a make-up exam. If you do not do so you will not be allowed to take the make-up exam. Make-up exams are more difficult. Make-up exams must be scheduled within one week of the scheduled exam date. If you do not arrive to take the make-up exam at our mutually agreed upon day and time, consequences will be severe (either not allowed to reschedule the exam or penalized a percentage of the exam). If you are unable to take the final exam, I will assign you an "Incomplete" grade for the course. You are responsible for obtaining the paperwork for the "Incomplete" grade at the Admission and Records office.

Quizzes (50 points each - 150 points total)

There will be three quizzes. You will need Scantron forms and pencils for each quiz. They will occur on September 20, October 13, and November 15. Each credit is available for each quiz. A quiz make-up is available at the final exam. It is cumulative and more difficult. I allow only one quiz make-up.

Grades

I will post grades periodically on my website (www.cuyamaca.edu/shaber).Click on Student Progress link on the side panel of my home page. Go to this course and type in your 9-digit student number. I will distribute this number at the start of the semester. This is a random number generated by my grade book software. You are expected to write the number on your syllabus or in your textbook. Students are responsible for keeping track of their points received for each assignment and also for keeping track of their point total. There is a convenient chart located at the back of this syllabus for your use. Students are strongly advised to keep their graded work in case there is a disagreement as to points earned at the end of the semester. Final grades will be available on the "Student Progress" link or by telephone via College Connection. I will not communicate grade information by telephone or e-mail. I do not round up the percentage score for final course grades since extra credit is available throughout the semester. Final course grades are not negotiable. I will only revisit your final grade if I have made a mathematical error or if I entered the wrong score in my grade book.

  A =  90% plus of available points
  B =  80-89.9% of available points
  C =  70-79.9% of available points
  D =  60-69.9% of available points
  F =  59.9% of available points and below

Extra Credit

This will be given on each quiz and exam. Also extra credit can be earned for background information research and news articles that relate to the course. (Only 4 news articles will be accepted.) A total of 15 extra credit points can be attained this way.
News article extra credit: Bring the news article to class with your name on it to be turned in after you give your brief oral presentation. Each news article presentation is worth 2 points. Your presentation should be no more than three (3) minutes in length. The news article should relate to what we are discussing in the class.
Ideas for background information reports: Questions that the readings raise, vocabulary that you don't comprehend, historical terms that you don't understand.
Please "clear" any background research topic with me. Background research topics are worth 3 bonus points each.

Class Participation  (50 points)

Attendance will be taken on a regular basis. Each student may miss three classes without penalty, but after the third absence there will be a 10-point penalty for each absence thereafter. Points will be determined on the basis of attendance and participation in class discussion and group activities. I will subtract 5 points of participation grade for each scheduled group activity that you miss. An important component of the participation grade is classroom courtesy and respect for both the instructor and classmates. If any student chooses to violate course policies, he or she will forfeit significant class participation points.

WebQuest Bonus Assignment

Students may write a report of 4-7 pages on a significant woman or event for this time period. The goal of the project is to teach the student how to find scholarly primary source history material on the Internet. The report is to be double-spaced and typed in font 12. Print sources are not acceptable sources. This is an Internet research project. The report must contain citation of Internet sources within the body of the paper. Guidelines for the report and topics will be distributed in class. I must approve the topic. The topic must be a woman whose adult life falls within the scope of our course (1607-1877). Your topic must be chosen by October 6. The paper is due November 8. Students will briefly share a portion of their research findings with the class (3 minutes maximum) in order to obtain the full 15 bonus points. Choosing the topic by October 6 deadline and turning in the required information at that time is worth 5 bonus points; however if you don't turn in the required paper and share with the class you will not be eligible for the 5 points bonus for getting your topic choice to me in the format that I will share with you by October 6. Please see my plagiarism policy under the requirements section of the syllabus.

Class Policies

  • Students are expected to attend class for the total class meeting time. If you need to leave early you must notify the instructor before the session begins. I do not allow students to leave the room once the class has started!!! No backpack rule: I regard packing up early disruptive. Please do not pack up until prompted to do so.

  • Courtesy is important in the classroom in order to maintain a positive classroom learning environment. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones when you enter. Place all phones, pagers, Walkmen, PDA devices and any other electronic equipment in your bag, purse or backpack - away from your lap or desk and out of sight. If there is a significant reason why you must leave your phone or pager turned on, please discuss this with me before doing do. Another aspect of classroom courtesy is to refrain from talking while the instructor or your fellow classmates are talking. Students who choose to violate this policy may be asked to leave the classroom or may be placed in another seat in the room. Moreover, class participation points will be deducted for lack of respect and courtesy in the classroom.

  • Students must come to class on time. Three tardies will count as one unexcused absence. If you are tardy, do not walk in front of the instructor; wait for an opportune moment to take your seat. Tardies will be considered when I distribute class participation grade points.

  • Attendance will be taken regularly for recordkeeping purposes. Only 4 unexcused absences will be allowed. Failure to comply may result in my dropping you from the course with an "excessive absence drop" (see Attendance Policy - Cuyamaca College Catalog). Each student may miss three classes without penalty for class participation grade. There will be a 10-point penalty for every absence after the third one. Call me at 660-4212  or e-mail me at susan.haber@gcccd.edu in order to find out the work that you missed and the assignments for the next class meeting. Also it is wise to contact a fellow student if you are absent to discuss missed coursework and future assignments. There is always a possibility that I have to change the assignment listed in the syllabus.

  • Students are advised to do some extra credit when it is offered in order to build up their point total.

  • If you cannot attend class on a Midterm date and you have a valid excuse, you must contact me on or before the exam date. If you do not do so you will not be allowed to take a make-up exam. Make-up exams must be scheduled within one week of the scheduled exam date. There is no make-up for the Final Exam. (See make-up exam policy delineated under the syllabus under topic, "Exams.")

  • Academic Honesty: If I find you cheating, I will take away your work and give you a zero for that evaluation. Please keep your eyes on your own paper during exams. Wandering eyes might be interpreted as reading someone's work in order to use their information for your exam. Plagiarism is taking someone else's work without giving them attribution. This includes "cutting and pasting" from print media, web sites or someone else's paper or report. While studying together is encouraged, all work submitted must be original. Your written work should be your own words. If you copy directly or use the exact words from a print or Internet source you must cite the source. You should also cite another writer's ideas; therefore if you use another writer's conclusion or argument you must add a citation.

  • Come to glass with writing materials. Please take all extraneous items off your desk and out of sight. No personal grooming or eating is allowed; however I allow you to drink liquids. Please be careful to clean up after yourself.

  • You will need to purchase five (5) Scantron® forms 882-ES for exams. The essay portion of the Midterm will be written in pen in a Blue Book. You must bring a "clean" Blue Book (small size) to class to be able to take the essay portion.

  • Graded Group Activities: You must be present in class with your assignment completed and written when your group compiles its information and makes the presentation in order to receive the 10 points for each graded scheduled group activity. It is your responsibility to check the syllabus to see the dates that group work is due. I try to follow the syllabus schedule but there are times that I may have to change the date of a scheduled group activity. You are responsible for checking with a fellow student or me if you are absent to get the assignments for the next class meeting. If you are absent the meeting before the group activity is due, you must call or e-mail me to get your assigned topic. Points will be deducted for incomplete or sloppy work. You must turn in your own work. Turning in the same written work (the same words for a portion of the paper or for the whole paper) as another member of your group will result in a zero (0) for this activity. The presentation is a "group" function; however the preparation for the group response is an individual one. Written group work cannot be submitted late.

  • It is your responsibility to check the syllabus to see the dates that work is due. If you are absent you should call or e-mail me to get the assignment. Specific assignments in Wolock will be communicated at the end of each class.
