The Course for Spring 2012:
Recommended on-campus orientation at Cuyamaca College:
Section: 5765 on Sat., 1/21, from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm in Room F508
Section: 5770 on Sat., 1/21, from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm in Room F508
If you cannot attend the orientation: The purpose of this orientation is to assure you understand requirements, expectations, assignments, grading and schedule flow in the course. If you are unable to attend the on-campus orientation, you will be required to take and pass an orientation quiz before any course work can begin. The quiz (with instructions) will be available within our Blackboard classroom when you first enter on the first day of the semester. No need to email me if you are a registered student and miss the on-campus orientation, just complete the quiz at the start of the class.
This course uses the online program "Blackboard" as a "virtual classroom." Instead of coming to on-campus classes, the course is held online and can be assessed anytime day or night from anywhere. The only on-campus meeting is an optional orientation (the course is 100% internet-based). The online classroom experience is based on a printed textbook, PowerStudy DVD-ROM with narrated lectures, online activities and discussions.
The course is designed to go beyond the typical online course. The course includes the following (all integrated to fit together seamlessly):
1. Online flashcards, crossword puzzles, module summaries & outline, glossaries, practice quizzes
2. PowerStudy DVD-ROM includes multimedia lectures, interactive exercises, 68 videos
3. Online testing (both open-book quizzes, timed tests, and an optional online midterm and final)
4. Posted online discussions with both the instructor and other students
5. Web site reports (using DVD) with instructor feedback
6. Optional online research reports using included InfoTrac (with instructor feedback)
7. Grading system: clear and available with constantly updated scores and totals

Important Considerations:
This course demands independent learning, self-discipline, and TIME-MANAGEMENT SKILLS.
* Time Committment:
Online work can be done anytime (24/7), but there are weekly deadlines.
Plan to devote much more time to it than you do a lecture class:
A lecture class meets 3 hours per week with at least an additional 3 - 6 hours of homework per week.
Plan on spending an equivalent amount on this class.
There are weekly quizzes, discussion posts, and writing assignments.
* This course demands that you already possess good computer knowledge and skills.
* Good writing skills are essential.
