The Course for Fall 2009:
* Note that this online course has an on-campus orientation (see below). If you are unable to attend recommended on-campus orientation, email the instructor tom.doyle@gcccd.edu by 8/22. If you miss the on-campus orientation, you will be required to pass an orientation quiz online so that you fully understand the requirements and expectations of the course before any course work can begin.
(On-campus orientation Sat., 8/22, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm in Room F508)
This course uses the online program "Blackboard" as a "virtual classroom." Instead of coming to on-campus classes, the course is held online and can be assessed anytime day or night from anywhere. The only on-campus meeting is an orientation. The online classroom experience is based on a printed textbook (see below) and online course content.
The course includes the following:
1. Online learning objectives, Powerpoint Outlines, hundreds of Web sources, and chapter glossaries
2. Online audio flashcards, crossword puzzles, practice quizzes for reviewing terms and information
3. Online quizzes (both open-book and timed, closed-book)
4. Posted online discussions with both the instructor and other students
5. Writing Assignments: Web site reports or InfoTrac research exercise (with instructor feedback)
6. Optional online student presentations (posted for all in the class to view)
7. Grading system: clear and available with constantly updated scores and totals

Grading:
Your final grade will be based on scores from:
- online open-book quizzes (1 per week)
- the quality and quantity of your participation in online discussions (weekly deadlines)
- online closed-book (timed) tests (1 per week)
- written reports - either a Web report or InfoTrac exercise (1 per week)
- optional, extra-credit, online presentations (2 per semester)
Important Considerations:
This course demands independent learning, self-discipline, and TIME-MANAGEMENT SKILLS.
* Time Committment:
Online work can be done anytime (24/7), but there are weekly deadlines.
Plan to devote much more time to it than you do a lecture class:
A lecture class meets 3 hours per week with at least an additional 3 - 6 hours of homework per week.
Plan on spending an equivalent amount on this class.
There are weekly quizzes, discussion posts, and writing assignments.
* This course demands that you already possess good computer knowledge and skills.
* Good writing skills are essential.
