The Course for Spring 2012:
Recommended on-campus orientation at Cuyamaca College Sat., 1/21, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm in Room F508
If you cannot attend the orientation: The purpose of this orientation is to assure you understand requirements, expectations, assignments, grading and schedule flow in the course. If you are unable to attend the on-campus orientation, you will be required to take and pass an orientation quiz before any course work can begin. The quiz (with instructions) will be available within our Blackboard classroom when you first enter on the first day of the semester. No need to email me if you are a registered student and miss the on-campus orientation, just complete the quiz at the start of the class.
This course uses the online program "Blackboard" as a "virtual classroom." Instead of coming to on-campus classes, the course is held online and can be assessed anytime day or night from anywhere. The only on-campus meeting is an optional orientation (the course is 100% internet-based). The online classroom experience is based on a printed textbook, online multimedia, and online discussions.
The course is designed to go beyond the typical online course and includes the following:
1. Online PowerPoint presentations and online videos for every chapter
2. Online flashcards, crossword puzzles, glossaries, and interactive practice quizzes
3. Printed text with accompanying online, interactive eBook
4. Online quizzes (both untimed and timed)
5. Web site reports (from hundreds of sources), InfoTrac activities, Google search reports (all with instructor feedback)
6. Posted online discussions with both the instructor and other students in the class
7. Optional online student presentation (posted for all to view) and optional final exam
8. Grading system: clear and available with constantly updated scores

Grading:
Your final grade will be based on scores from:
- online untimed quizzes (1 per week) and timed tests (1 per week)
- the quality and quantity of your participation in online discussions (weekly deadlines)
- written reports - either a Web report, InfoTrac activity, or Google search report (1 per week)
- optional, extra-credit, online presentation
- optional, extra-credit, final exam
Important Considerations:
This course demands independent learning, self-discipline, and TIME-MANAGEMENT SKILLS.
* Time Committment:
Online work can be done anytime (24/7), but there are weekly deadlines.
Plan to devote much more time to it than you do a lecture class:
A lecture class meets 3 hours per week with at least an additional 3 - 6 hours of homework per week.
Plan on spending an equivalent amount on this class.
There are weekly quizzes, discussion posts, and writing assignments.
* This course demands that you already possess good computer knowledge and skills.
* Good writing skills are essential.
