The Title III Project at Cuyamaca College is in the middle of its first year. The title of this five year project is “Increasing Retention and  Academic Success of High-Risk Students.” The project focuses on three specific components: technology integration, faculty training and            curriculum development. During the Spring 2004  semester, Title III focused on establishing a foundation at Cuyamaca College. The project is fully staffed and introduces a new position for an Online Counselor/Retention Specialist. Along with the formation of the project team, the grant calls for a Title III Coordinating Task Force. This task force will serve this project as an advisory group made up of various department representatives.

In conjunction with Staff Development Week, Title III will be the      headlining theme for all workshops. The theme will be “Student       Success and Retention.” Workshops will be videotaped and made    available at the Learning and Resource Center for staff development credit. Title III will host four particular workshops: Title III Overview panel, high risk students, technology integration and learning         communities. Join us!

Title III funds for year one provided 33 new computers for faculty in collaboration with CC’s Technology Plan Committee; in addition, 4 new computers were purchased for the faculty workroom and also 7  student access computers will enhance the Learning and Resource Center lab. Reference materials on high-risk students will continue to be purchased in an effort to support the projects’ goal towards    Student Retention and Success. Funds also support CC’s basic skills and DSP&S students in the tutoring center.

Title III is extending the opportunity to award faculty stipends. Faculty may apply for stipends up to $2500 in the areas of technology    integration, curriculum development, and faculty training related to student success and retention. Applications are available online     (http://www.cuyamaca.edu/title3/previewstipend.asp) and the     deadline for submission is Friday, September 10, 2004.

MESSAGE FROM PROJECT COORDINATOR

Text Box: Cuyamaca College is strongly committed to pursuing strategic planning activities that support Academic Excellence and Program Development as well as Student Success. The Title III grant project is a major resource to us as we seek to strengthen curriculum development, technology integration, and faculty training opportunities.
Beyond goal accomplishment, a successful project is comprised of  talented people who make things happen. We are fortunate to count on an extraordinary project team, including Maria Mendoza-Bautista, our Title III Activity Director, who came aboard in spring 2004. Maria has drawn on her experiences working extensively with youth, communities and families as a program director to help us kick-off a successful first year on the project. As well, our two Faculty Liaisons, Teresa McNeil and Jan Ford, have contributed hours of their time and creativity to shaping our activities. Rounding out our project team, I want to acknowledge Vangie Meneses, Dean of Counseling and Guidance, Darlene Cole, Manager of Institutional Research and Pei Hua Chou, Associate Dean of Learning Resources and Instructional Computing. Patricia Santana, the college Staff Development Coordinator (and Title III Task Force member), has also been serving as an ex-officio member and has facilitated the workshops that we are planning for fall 2004. Finally, Greg Gomez was selected as the Title III Online Counselor and Retention Specialist in June– a critical addition to our project team.
We ended the spring semester with the convocation of the Title III Coordinating Task Force that further enhanced direct faculty participation through the addition of Tammi Marshall and Lyn Neylon, Basic Skills faculty representatives, and Jeri Resto, Librarian. In addition, Barbara Takahashi is representing classified staff.
The roster of faculty and staff who participate on both the Project Team and Coordinating Task Force attests to another major strength of the grant program: it allows Student Services and Instruction to collaboratively continue building a comprehensive college- - and one that meets the needs of high-risk students through innovative initiatives.
With the establishment of a proactive project team, we are ready to reach out to you for your ideas on how best to strengthen student success through learning communities, enhance use of technology in the classroom and in the counseling center, and program/curriculum development. While federal grants require compliance with a myriad of regulations, Title III offers us an opportunity within the approved scope of work to strengthen our institution and make good on our promise of Learning for the Future.
Welcome aboard!
